AbstractThe accelerated process of urbanization is responsible for significant anthropogenic alterations of natural landscapes. The understanding and monitoring of these changes are fundamental for urban planning which envisions the spatial planning and the contention of environmental impacts resulting from occupation of new áreas, including high rates of soil high imapermeabilization. Remote sensing delivers a series of tools and products suitable for the development of a variety of up-to-date and historical information at a synoptic view to be analysed within this context. The objective of this research is to delimit the fractions of impermeable surfaces (that indicate the urban growth direction) within the city of Manaus, Amazonas State, Brazil, between the years 1987 and 2006 based on the application of Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA - ROBERTS et al. (1998)) on a series of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. In total, 30 sample spectra were selected for the modeling of 2 and 3 endmembers e 18 sample spectra for the 4 endmembers, of which 97.7% was correctly modeled for the 2006 image and 99.2% for the 1987 image with a root mean squared (RMS) error of 2.5 %. Finally, fraction maps were generated with each of the pixels representing a percentage of the determined endmember present within the pixel. This study demonstrates the potential of satellite images of moderate spatial resolution and the mixture models based on multiple endmembers for the analysis of urban environmental problems related to soil impermeabilization.
